Teach at A2

Artisans Asylum is built on shared knowledge. Our instructors are makers, professionals, artists, engineers, and craftspeople who believe in teaching what they know and helping others build confidence in the shop.

We offer classes across a wide range of disciplines—from fiber arts and jewelry to machining, woodworking, digital fabrication, electronics, casting, and more. If you have expertise in a hands-on skill and a passion for guiding others, teaching at A2 is an opportunity to share your craft within a supportive and creative community.

Instructors design and lead their own classes, workshops, and skill-based sessions. Whether you're teaching foundational techniques, introducing specialized tools, or guiding project-based learning, your course becomes part of a larger ecosystem of making, learning, and collaboration in our Boston makerspace.

Our Education Team works closely with instructors to review proposals, coordinate scheduling, and ensure classes align with shop safety and equipment requirements. Once approved, classes are promoted through our calendar and registration system.

Teaching at A2 is flexible, community-driven, and rooted in practical, hands-on learning. We welcome new ideas, new mediums, and new approaches that help expand what’s possible within our workshops.

If you're ready to share your skills, submit a class proposal below to get started!

FAQs

What kinds of topics can I teach at Artisans Asylum?

1

We welcome a wide range of hands-on subjects — from woodworking, jewelry, casting, fiber arts, and machining to digital fabrication, electronics, and more. If your skill can be taught safely in a workshop or studio setting and helps others build practical confidence, it’s a strong fit.

Formal teaching experience isn’t required. We’re looking for knowledgeable, safety-minded makers who can clearly guide others through a process. Our Education Team will work with you to shape your class structure and expectations.

Do I need prior teaching experience?

All classes begin with a proposal. Submit your idea using the Class Proposal Form, including your topic, outline, and any prerequisites. Our Education Team will review it and follow up with the next steps.

How do I submit a class proposal?

For group classes, instructors receive 50% of the total class tuition. Your earnings depend on the class price and how many seats are filled. We promote all classes through our calendar and marketing channels, and instructors who help spread the word often see higher enrollment.

Instructors may also offer private lessons when space is available. You set your own rates for private sessions, and Artisans Asylum retains 35% of the revenue in exchange for use of our facilities and administrative support. Private lessons must be scheduled responsibly so shared shop space remains accessible.

How are instructors compensated?

4

No. We also welcome online class proposals. From coding and digital tools to finance and business classes for artists and makers, many topics work well virtually.

If your class is approved, we’ll coordinate the online format and any needed materials. For supply-based classes, we offer options for materials kits — either shipping them to students or arranging pickup at our space.

Do I have to teach on-site at Artisans Asylum?

5

Many classes involve tools and processes that require care and attention. While we encourage instructors to carry their own insurance, Artisans Asylum’s waivers and general liability coverage protect instructors as long as they are not acting with gross negligence.

If you plan to teach under a corporate entity or business name, you must carry your own general liability insurance and list Artisans Asylum as additionally insured.

What liability coverage is in place for instructors?

We appreciate instructors who want to contribute to the community. If you’re interested in offering a free class or hosting a publicly available event, reach out to education@artisansasylum.com to share your idea and start the conversation.
