Tool Testing & Safety Training

Many tools at Artisans Asylum require a Tool Test before they can be used independently. A Tool Test is not a lesson or training session. It is a brief safety assessment that confirms you can operate specific equipment correctly and without supervision.

Most large or specialized machines require a passed test, while many basic hand tools and smaller equipment do not. Tools are typically labeled to indicate whether testing is required. If you are ever unsure, assume a test is needed before use. A full list of tools and their testing requirements is available here. Some shops, such as Jewelry, require certification before using any equipment in that shop.

Tool Test certifications are valid for one year and must be maintained through active use. If a certification has expired or if you have not used a tool for an extended period, you may be asked to retest. Tool testing is a free service provided by trained volunteers and is available to members, prospective members, and Day Pass users.

Please note that Tool Tests are strictly safety checks. They do not teach operation or technique. If you would like instruction, we recommend registering for a class. Some classes include a Tool Test as part of the curriculum; check the class description for details. Non-members who complete a Tool Test through a class must have a Nexudus account so their certification can be recorded.

Schedule Tool Testing

Tool Tests are scheduled directly with approved Tool Testers. To request a test, use the scheduling links below. Each tester manages their own availability, so appointment times may vary by shop and tool.

Before scheduling, make sure you meet any posted prerequisites and are familiar with the equipment’s basic operation and safety procedures. Coming prepared helps the test run smoothly and ensures you can be evaluated efficiently.
